Sustainability
The majority of our Handwoven Throws are hand dyed using natural ingredients. The process is unbelievably beautiful to witness and this ancient technique is something we are incredibly proud to support. Follow along as Chreun, our lead dyer, walks you through the steps she takes to dye our Roum Handwoven Throw Collection.
Step 1
First Chreun prepares the dye by harvesting the raw ingredients and then chopping them to prepare for boiling.
Step 2
Then Chruen prepares the kiln by burning the left over rice husks from the rice fields nearby and begins soaking the raw ingredients in boiling water for 3-4 hours.
Step 3
Next Chreun filters all of the sediment out of the color, then brings it to a boil once again. She then soaks & cleans the cotton to ensure it evenly absorbs the dye.
Step 4
Next Chreun dips the cleaned cotton into the heated dye by hand repeatedly (roughly 10+ times). She is photographed here standing over the kiln.
Step 5
Now Chreun leaves the cotton in the boiling dye for 3-4 hours. The length of time determines how rich the color will become!
Step 6
Next Chreun hangs the cotton to dry for 1 full day before preparing to send it off (via tuktuk) to our weavers!
